Done in my best Dr john tickles voice,
when we host pictures on sites like image shack etc
do they stay there forever? do they store them for futher generations?
or do they delete them after so many days, weeks months or years?
Its done to your host mate. For instance, flickr.com stores until you delete them. With a free account, it will only show the first 200 pics, but with a pro account (about £12 a year!) it will show all your pictures and you get unlimited storage space for the year! Year on year, its a great deal (in my opinion)!
I read an article once, about hosting your own pictures from your own computer.
I was going to do it, then got given some web site space, and just host them there (using coppermiine) and post them using the [.img] [./img] tags (with out the . of course)
Hosting on your own computer, while techinically possible, is a bit of an arse to be honest. It requires your connection to be on all the time, and what not....Something I personally don't relish the thought of (even though its permamently on )
As for hosting...its as long as youre paying for it or delete it.
Free sites like Imageshack are different. I'm not sure on everyone's rules, but ImageShack delete after so long I believe, although how long is anyones guess....I do know it isn't a measly amount of time anyway.
I've found that even Paintbucket has stuff of mine from 3 years back, though I usually clear stuff out before then. I think as long as the account's active they keep it in.
AIUI the 200 limit on a free account only takes effect on your flickr page. So if you've uploaded 250 pics to flickr and linked them all to a blog or whatever, they still show on your blog. You can upload as many pics as you like to a flickr free account. If you later convert to pro, then hey presto, all your older pics appear.
