1. Are you in paid work at the moment i.e. salary?
Best to speak to HMRC to clarify your tax postion.
2. Plenty of invoices on the web to look at use google
3. You can only charge VAT if you are VAT registered.
There is a theshold above which you must register, but you may voluntarily register below this if it is beneficial to you.

Congratulations on the first job:thumbs:

Dont forget insurance and public liability!!

It may be worth checking things out with your local Business Link who offer free advice for small businesses.

where are you resident? Europe? US? You write as if you're outside the UK at the moment?

What sort of contract ? will you invoice in £/$/€ ?

Are you an individual or a business?

edit:

sorry - I see you're london based.
If it is likely to be a one off - and I guess that you are hoping not, then you could do it be declaring the income on your tax return at the end of the year.

If you anticipate it becoming a regular thing then you should look at getting advice on the limited company/partnership/sole trader thing. You may find that people prefer to deal with limited companies - it gives protection to your clients on PAYE/NI.

VAT is charged only if VAT registered - that only becomes compulsory when your turnover hits about £55000

I am not in paid work at the moment .. I have just called HMRC to registered as a self employed, I thought it was enough .. is it ?
The thing is my oral english is not really good therefore I don't understand every details ..

I thought that there are some rules to respect and some things to appear on the invoice .. ?

Thanks a lot for your time ..

This is how we see things having run our Ltd Co for 20 years now.
It is insurance to cover your equipment and working liabilities.
If someone trips over your bag or tripod, you need Public Liability insurance. This insurance covers
you for damage you may do to other persons and/or their property but does not cover you for
damage to your own equipment.
You only need professional indemnity insurance if you are advising and directing the client.
If the client is giving you the brief you do not need professional indemnity.
Regarding VAT, the VAT registration threshold is £64,000.
Being a Limitied Company gives a certain amount of protection, more to you than your clients.
That said clients look upon a Limited Company as a professional (don't know why!)
With a Limited Company you will always be liable to the VAT and tax man and the bank!
You are also bound by law to submit Limited Company accounts, returns etc each year.

Yes, you can operate as a Sole Trader and it's pretty simple. Invoice your clients, keep records of your income and expenses and hire an accountant to sort out your tax once a year.

If you prefer to do it yourself there's software available to help you or the HMRC website also has lots of information.

Keep within the limits and you can get a free business bank account from Abbey:
http://www.anbusiness.com

Then, as a sole trader, you can be Mr Rudyb34 T/A Joe Tog and cheques payable to Mr Rudyb34 or Joe Tog can be paid in. Both you and HMRC should be happier to keep your biz and personal accounts separate.
