hi,
I am thinking about buying a cheap car as a project. I am aged 15 and am not sure about the format of buying a car. Is there paperwork envolved when you buy it. I will get a transporter service to collect the car. Woud I be able to just turn up, pay in cash and collect the car or is there more envolved?

Thanks alot,

GFWilliams:)

Are we talking about a car to restore to road worthy condition?

If so, you'll need to inform the dvla of the change of ownership, a driver's details need to be on the form as the new owner, so you'll have to get a parent or sibling to do that bit for you.

As the car isn't going to be driven until you get a licence, you'll need to keep it off the road and declare a SORN otherwise your liable to road tax.

Buying the car though can be a matter of handing over the cash in exchange for the car and the ownership document.

Getting it home depends on it's condition and location I suppose, as well as having someone available with insurance and the ability to pilot the afore mentioned vehicle :)

Hope that helps

Thanks for your help,

The car will already be road worthy, if i swear it of the road straight away and trailer it home, will I have to notify the DVLA of the ownership change. Also, will my age be a problem do you think?

Thanks alot,
GFWilliams :D

will my age be a problem do you think?

I can't see why it would be. There's no law against buying a car at 15 and the person selling will get their money so I can't see why they'd have a problem selling to you.

Out of interest, what are you thinking of buying? I built a replica Ferrari Dino from scratch about 13 years ago. It took me 2 years to complete but I had a great time doing it :D

Hi mate.

As stated above ....

If the car is to be kept on a road .. (public highway), it must have road tax. (Disc displayed in window).

Also, you will have to sign a V1 or V11 - can never remember - to declare to the DVLA that the car is now yours. Again, if under age, someone will have to do this for you. This is known as the log book.

If anyone is going to drive the car for you .... the car must be insured in someone's name. Even someone with their own insurance policy CANNOT drive the vehicle unless it has been insured by someone else. It is a common mistake by people to think that they can drive other cars under their own insurance policy. Unless your car has 'it's own' insurance policy - they can't! If you are using a transporter, this is not relevant.

Also, if anyone is going to drive the vehicle, it will need to have a MOT certificate as well as road tax.

Good luck!

You will still have to notify the DVLA Of any ownership change. You can then declare it as off the road - and re-register if you ever plan to use it on the rad again.

The other thing you will have to factor into the equation is the insurance, when you are old enough to drive it. I am afraid the isurance companies may well  at you trying to insure something of this ilk
( assuming this is a project to keep and not sell on?)

Yeah you should honestly be looking at something like a 1.0 or a 1.2 clio. You will find that your insurance quote will be at least 1.5k on something like the Clio let alone a 3.5l BMW lol. If you intend to go through with it, start saving as the insurance will at least 4k if not more.

I will turn it into a trackday car, so it won't be road legal...
I knowabout insurance... got an older brother & sister
I will strip it out and lighten it as much as possible

Regards,
George

In that case why are you considering a massive heavy barge? Why not just buy a 205 gti or a 106 rallye

Not really. A lightweight hatch will run rings around it.

If you want a fun track car get a real monster sorted as a project.

Think of something thats unassuming, and then stick a rover v8 in it driving the rear wheels :D

Thats a bit more than your budget :D

On the subject of cost, the average cost camera kit on here could buy up all the used rovers in the country :D

Some flash unmentionable people here with their collections of 1 series and L glass and wimberleys etc could get rover trading again with the cost of their kits

something like an old hyundai pony with 400 horse should be fun :D

Hello

Honestly you don't want a 735 as a track day car. As already mentioned it's heavy but the cost for bits & the stuff that'll go (or has gone) wrong will cost you a fortune, even if you strip it.

What this really should be is what car should I buy for £500 for track use & learning maintenance...

and the answer - A CAPRI 2.0 pinto engined one

Cheap to buy, really cheap bits, easy to upgrade and get ready for the track without costing you a fortune. Also cheap to fix if you have an off. Rear wheel drive and surprisingly good performance especially when stripped.

Huge club following so lots of advice
