Right, I took one photo and edited the hell out of it until the background looked how I wanted, but now I'm not happy with the colours, tones, texture of the face. What I thought I could do is clone the face from one layer to the other, but I can't line it up properly.

So.... is there a way to like... make bits if one layer transparent so the layer underneath shows through instead?

Yes, I know I should have done it with a mask in the first place but I liked it at the time.

I'm not that great with photoshop so help appreciated.

CS2 BTW. (how old school am I?)

Sounds like you need to use a layer mask, this essentailly make an imaginary hole in the layer (or hides ) bits on the layer below, the beauty with a layer mask is you paint on black or white to hide/reveal whats on the layer below so if you make a mistake you just switch colour and paint the mistake back out.

What do I need to select to alter the opacity on the layer mask tho?

If the top layer is the one with the background right but the face too dark (or whatever) then draw a selection around the face on the top layer then with the selection active (marching ants) click the layer mask icon on the top layer, it should make a hole (sort of) in the top layer.
Here the hole (the black area on the mask) shows the darker blured background.
