can anyone recommend a good book on digital photography that would be easy to understand(preferably idiot talk :rules: )as i'm gonna need some help in getting the best out of my sony alpha 100.also,what magazines would you recommend as there seems to be a lot of choice out there...

thanks in advance ;)

i like practical photography as a mag. but all the tog tips are availible on line

what sort of tips are you looking for?

here i would say the best place to start.

just ask any question and somebody will know the answer and help.

if they think somewhere explains it better than they can they will direct you to the right place.

this is the place to start.

good luck.

look forward to seeing some pics

Have a good look around the tutorials section Stan, there's lots of useful info there. Any specific questions, just ask. :)

The Digital Photography Book - 'How to take photos like a pro' by Scott Kelby
This book has helped me in many ways and its practical and gets straight to the point. Its an amusing read too, you'll see why if you pop to Waterstones and have a flick through. £12 ish I think.

Stan,
I returned to photography with an A100 after a long break. My last SLR was a manual focus Contax 35mm film camera so even though I had a pretty sound grasp of the basics by far the biggest challenge was learning how to use the bewildering array of settings on the camera.

I cannot recommend highly enough the eBook by Gary Friedman for this:
http://www.friedmanarchives.com/alpha100/index.htm

There is a fair bit of general photographic advice but as a long time Minolta user the insight he can offer into the camera specific aspect is invaluable. Having changed systems from Contax to Sony I can safely say that buying this was the best tenner I've spent and has saved months of trial and error.

Good to see at least two more Alpha owners out there  Magazines that I regulary get include Digital Camera, Digital Photo, Photography Monthly, Practical Photography and the new Digital SLR Photography - this one does seem to feature more on the Alpha than the other mags though, and that's about it (costs me a fortune each month in magazines) :bang:

thanks again guys(and gals)all advice taken on board, and will visit waterstones or similar book shop ASAP.picked up a magazine today(digital camera)in the M4 services on my way to london(hospital appointment for the missus)for something to read whilst there, but spotted a jacobs camera shop in cannon street,so ended up walking there instead for a clear UV filter and lens cap for the 85-300 lens .i'm really looking forward to getting into the swing of using the alpha to somewhere near it's potential,as i'm sure i'm in for a challenge doing so..........:help:

got myself the digital photography book by scott kelby yesterday..will make very interesting reading.also just ordered the gary friedman book(not e-book)from amazon.com for 35 USD,but will take 4-6 weeks unfortunately :'(.

now i'm after some advice if any of you could help(or should i start a new thread)..going to watch some motorcycle road racing this weekend, and i want to take some piccy's,question is...is the sports setting on the camera good enough,or as scott kelby says..use a slower shutter speed, and if so..how do i go about doing that, and to what speed do i set it at?

hopefully, one of you alpha users out there will have the answer for me..

thanks in advance
