Hey,

While I am still saving for a D800 I've managed to find our 3 year old Panasonic NV-GS300 and several home moves all on DV tape.

Not having a DV cable I've luckily been able to use a USB cable to pull the movies over from the tape using Windows Live Movie Maker. It had a few dropped frames but I've not noticed any issues with the footage pulled over.

However, its around 60 mins of video and is pushing 13.4gb.

What do I do next? Whats the best way of editing the footage and compressing the file size? I don't just want them on the PC I also want them to play on DVD players.

I've got access to Sony and Adobe editing suites via work but never used them. Most I've done is make slideshows of images to music.

Very grateful for any help you can give :)

The first thing to do is take your time and decide what message you want to give. Look through the video, make notes, see what kind of finished product(s) you want.

Firing up the editing application is the last step in the process, not the first.

Would agree with Stratman, i.e. better to start with a plan of what you want to achieve.
This said, I would make the following comments (with the proviso that i don't use windows so I'm not familiar with the file format WMM uses...);
1. Make sure you keep the tape as a 'master',
2. Consider exporting your material uncompressed to dvd (3 of) to store the media.
3. You could also compress the whole media using something like mpegstreamclip: http://www.squared5.com/ and get it on one dvd.
4. There are loads of tutorials on youtube that I'm sure would get you off to a start with regard to editing.

Good luck with it. :)
