Help with the after photography.

I am struggling with post processing. I have Lightroom and DPP only. Do I need to use anything else? If so What?
I like to photograph nature and dogs mostly. Just I look on here and see some real cracking images with equipment like mine and wonder why I can't replicate it!

Canon 7D
400mm f5.6
100mm L Macro
50mm 1.4
Lightroom
DPP

Any advice on where to go for help - what to use software wise other than I have would be gratefully received. thanks Jon
 
That kit list is sufficient to produce high quality professional-standard work.

Possibly the missing element is more practice?
 
Whether you need something like photoshop is impossible to say without knowing exacly what your doing. Lightroom is great for the general editing, it's certainly capable of excelent results, as is your gear, what exactly is it your not getting?
 
Don't see any reason why you are having any major issues. Lightroom is like a far better copy of DPP with tons more features, so personally I would ignore DPP. With that kit list you should be churning out quality results with no issues.

I would get to grips with lightroom and do some tutorials unless you want to get into heavy PP then by all means purchase photoshop. I personally prefer to spend as little time in front of the computer though!

Very little, I'd say. Crop to emphasise the main subject (have you bumped into 'rule of thirds' composition technique? May work nicely with this), then punch up the contrast a bit (various ways: levels,curves, clarity in RAW), and a bit of sharpening because nearly all digital images benefit from sharpening.

May be worth joining in the 'how would you edit this' and 'PP game' threads here. Plenty of tips and advice to be had.
