Hi I was wondering if I could pick your brains please.

My husband and I are planning a week away exploring some of the English countryside, we are staying two nights in Scarborough then on to Hitchin for three nights. We will spend one day in London as its easy to get there by train from Hitchin. From there we can't decide where we would go next, possibly across country and back up the M6 direction taking in the Welsh border and the Lakes, or back up the same side but a different route.

Also

While in Scarborough and travelling down to Hitchin wondered if there are any must stop and see photography spots.

There is one thing on my hit list for the Hitchin area and that is the lavender fields but apart from that I am open to suggestions.

I would like to put together a photographic route of stop of points and would like your help in doing so.

Thanks in advance for any help and or links/photographs.

Close to the A1 are Rutland Water (http://www.anglianwater.co.uk/leisure/water-parks/rutland/) and Stamford (http://www.stamford.co.uk/explore/).

If you have time for a diversion have a look at the north Norfolk coast some really attractive villages (Brancaster Staithe, Burnham Deepdale, Cley next the Sea, for example) and huge skies. To be honest I think you would need to plan a stop over somewhere in north Norfolk to give you a chance of something more than a whistle stop tour.

If you are planning going back up the west side of England, Avebury could be a possibility (though it would take you a bit south from Hitchin).

I'm sure there will be many more suggestions.

A good site for getting an idea of what an area looks like is http://www.geograph.org.uk/ It can be searched for photos in just about anywhere.

Thats a lot of traveling in just one week, especially since your having a couple of nights in scarborugh, I fancy that it will curtail your photo oportunities somewhat. Not sure of your route to hitchin but there is the obvious York with its walls and ancient streets, oh and not to forget the cliffords tower. A few abbeys, such as Rievaulx, fountains and Bolton. It depends on your route and what you like to shoot.

Hi Steve yes I know but it's also a wee break for my husband too so I need to choose carefully. I had thought of Rievaulx Abbey, it looks fantastic! Just had a look at York and I think we might go straight there from Scarborough, we could have a good wander around York and then head to Hitchin which is roughly a 3 hr drive away. We are used to driving we do it for a living (Busman's Holiday springs to mind! lol)

Re Fountains Abbey we are on a flying visit to Harrogate in May, it's only 10 miles for Harrogate we could stop in by then. (y)

I think we will take the direct route to Hitchin from York down the A1(M), but if there was something really worth stopping for then we would take a detour.

Thanks for your reply Steve.

Hi Dave thanks also for your reply. Once we have done Hitchin we are a bit undecided, my husband had thought we would go back up the way had come stopping off at some of the coastal villages, so your suggestion of the North Norfolk coast fits in well. We would probably try and do a stopover somewhere in that area of the coast and another further up even York as Steve suggested and that would give us a better chance to look around.

Thanks once again for taking the time and appreciate the links you have provided.
