HELP with printing issues: What size images does my camera produce?

Hi, I'm using a D3 and am shooting in jpeg fine.

I was under the impression that the images it will produce would be the equivalent ratio of 6x4 and 7.5x5..... ie. the long side of the picture is 1.5x the short side.

Is this right?

If it is, why is it when I got to order prints of equivalent sizes does my image not seemingly fit properly?

I am using photobox and have just tried to order a 20x30 print and if I squash it to fit height wise it leaves a gap on the side or if I opt to have it fit the width the top and the bottom of the image is cropped.

Am I doing something wrong?

Your camera doesn't take a picture in inches or cms but in pixels which you then have to trim to fit into whatever size (in inches or cms etc.) you want.

Depending on how your particular printing company treats them you may need to leave a small amount on each side to make sure they don't trim off a wanted portion.

Thanks for coming back to me petersmart- would I be right in think what every it is measured in it should still be the same ratio?

ie. a picture of 6000 by 4000 pixels should fit precisely with a 6 x 4 inch photo.

I'm just trying to get my head around whether it's my image thats out or whether the print sizes that the likes of photobox advertise are marginally out- it would be a pain in the behind to have to produce an image myself and have to factor in the degree of innaccuracy just because their print sizes aren't bob-on!

Isn't there an FX and a DX mode on the D3 that changes the aspect ratio?

Native ratio on a D3 is 3:2..........6x4, 12x8 etc.........

Yes that is correct but are you just sending the full size image to them or editing it?

If editing are you setting the print size to 20 x 30 ?

Also have you checked what your printers actually print - the whole size as you send or do they leave a small margin etc?

Thanks guys, I had taken it in FX and as you say Tiler I thought it was 3:2. I'd done some tweaking in gimp, perhaps I had accidentally altered the ratio in the edit is all I can think as my other photos seem to marry up with the print sizes.
