Help with light settings.

Hi all,

i would like some help with some photos I took this afternoon. It was at an indoor weightlifting comp, The lights were quite low.
I changed settings and still they came out very dark.

What settings would you use for shotting under a low strip light, I was unable to use a flash as it was a competition etc.

We dont know the amount of light (quite low doesnt quite do it) and no idea what lens or more important speed of lens you ahve..

Give us more info and show us a pic of what you ahve got..

general rule of thumb is.. lens wide open and hike up the iso until you ahve desired shutter speed.

Sorry I am having problems getting photos onto the site. I use a Canon450d with a 70-300 1:4-5:.5 is USM canon lens.
I had it set on TV with Auto WB

Hi Kipax I understand you have a web site? Please can you send across you details.
Do you have any ideas of getting photos via an easy route onto this site. Currently I am saving them into Picassa then into flicka and then onto this site. I'm sure there must be an easier way

To be honest you've got no chance with a 450d and a 4.5-5.6 lens, your camera maxes out at ISO 1600 and you would need at least this with a 2.8 lens let alone something 2 stops slower, your only option is to dial in a couple of stops of under exposure but then youll just increase the noise to unacceptable levels.

My suggestion for what its worth without spending a lot of money is to buy a 50mm f/1.8 lens and see how you go.

Thanks Gary, I am quite inexperienced and could not work out how I could get good photos in low light without a flash!!

I love some strange sports ie Swimming and other indoor sports where a flash would be impossible to use at the vital moments, Starts etc.

I also like motor sports so a small lens would not really work in that arena.
Any suggestions? You mentioned that the 450d has some draw back with light as well? Any suggestions with this having expressed the kind of shots I like to take?? Would it be a new body ?
