I think the Sigma lens is probably not 100% compatible with the D40, since the D40 needs the lens to have the autofocus motor built in. The Sigma abbreviation for a lens of this type is HSM.

Here's a link to the Sigma page concerning D40(x) & D60 compatability
http://www.sigma-imaging-uk.com/quicklinks/HSM_lenses.htm
and among the lenses labelled HSM is one labelled as the one you listed, Sigma 70-300mm APO DG. Best bet is to contact the seller and check that it is suitable for your D40, ideally at first hand, by trying it for yourself!

Looks like it is compatible then. If possible though, still give it a try before you buy it - far easier than returning it after you've bought it.

The box states built in motor drive and the seller states for use with D40/60.
Maybe i have linked to the wrong one

Any other views on this lens would be appreciated

How much does he want for it?

2nd hand Nikkor 70-300 AF-S VR go for around £230.

It seems to get a decent write-up. As PsiFox says you can get the Nikon lens with VR for about £100 more, secondhand, but for the money it doesn't sound as if you can go far wrong with the Sigma.

Edit: For £100 it sounds like great value ;)
