I have just started out and need some advice on settings for fast sportshall sports,i have a canon 1d3 and 70/200 2.8l.

cheers felix

Thanks for the replys and the help. I was invited to shoot a roller derby on sunday,my first time at an indoor sports hall and very fast action. It was not what i expected at all. Could not beleve how fast it was, tried to use a flash but decided against it as there was only one other guy using one. So i decided to up my ISO and take it from there. Checked my shots and there is a lot of noise. ISO was set at 3200 f2.8. I have read that i could fix that in photo shop with the noise reduction tool. I dont have a photosuite yet.

What would yous advise for a photosuite?

thanks felix

I find white balance to be the big problem at roller derby, so normally set a custom WB shoot in raw and sort it all out later.

I've shot with and without flash, and how use a wireless flash set-up, if using flash you really don't need that fast a shutter speed in derby and can get away with 1/200 sec normally.

I'm still learning how to shoot derby to get the shoots I really want, but the local league have not had many bouts lately as they are moving from the local sports hall to their own permanent venue, which they have nicely lit with daylight bulbs for us photographers, or so I'm told :) I also have the first outdoor bout in a few weeks time.

As for editing I use Apple Aperture or Photoshop Elements 8

High ISO, lens wide open and custom WB. A more detailed setup will require more info from you

I am interested in this. With regard to Custom White Balance. If I am shooting at a gym comp in doors, if I took a picture of something white i.e a card and then select that picture via the menu for CWB. Is that all I need to do. Sorry, pretty new to all this.

thanks

Yes you could use a white card but 18% grey would be better. Personally I use an expodisk which I find more acurate than anything else on the market.

Just had a google on 18% grey. Its amazing what you learn. Thanks

Personally I'm not a huge fan of B&W shots, but here goes. Also I like to get just individual skaters as well as the group/action shots.

For lots more derby images check out Joe Schwartz he does flat track and banked derby

For B&W derby then Paul Robertson is your man

You'll have to give me a shout if you ever come down to Liverpool or Rainy City with the Glasgow Girls, I did have a look at the October bout up there with Rainy's but I've too much on that weekend to make the trip.
