hi folks

this may sound a bit strange, but here goes...okay,i took some shots of babies for my sons partners sister, and they want several copies of them at 20"x16".most online printing companies want the images at 300 DPI,so my question is..what is the best way to save the images at the required resolution, and to the size required[pixels i assume] in photoshop CS3.

Hope this makes sense...:)

I wouldn't worry over much. Resolution is only important for output. DPI is output. Use Photoshop Image Size dialog to calculate whether your existing image has sufficient pixels to print at 300 ppi to the required size. Don't forget to uncheck the resample box first. I'd say 300ppi is an ideal, you can often go quite a bit lower and not lose quality to obtain the size. 20" x 16" is quite large, and you rarely look at a print that large very close up. Don't forget however you size the image in the dialog, your monitor still only displays at 72ppi so you won't get an absolutely accurate representation on screen.

Hi Stan,

For a print size 20" x 16" you will need it to be in a 5:4 ratio crop, i tried printing photos before at 10" x 8" same ratio and it cropped off the ends as the standard from camera is 3:2 ratio...

If the lab uses good production software it will do a better job than a straight rescale in Photoshop

hi mark
yes mate,i've cropped the images to 20" x 16" or 5:4 as you say

Good... What dpi does photoshop say it is set to ???

Read somewhere that Loxley are fine at 240dpi so the image should be
4800 x 3840 pixels for 20" x 16"..

I havent printed any large images before and have wondered after cropping how do you get this pixel size ???
Do you resize in Photoshop or leave this to the printing company ???

Which firm are you going to use for printing Stan ???

hi mark...after i cropped the image to 20"x16"[all done in CS3],i went to image<>image size, checked the "resample image" box,and then entered the size and resolution required, which then gave me the pixel dimensions of 4800 wide x 6000 high for a particular image.i think you have to do any resizing etc...not up to printing company as far as i'm aware.

most probably will use either DS colour labs or supersize print .co.uk.some landscape shots that glyneath golf club wanted off me have had them done through this company, and recon the quality is great, but i've yet to see them to decide for myself,as i won't see them until this weekend hopefully...
