Help with GIMP

Just downloaded GIMP. Can anyone tell me how to get a photo into it to work on and any other tips. Sorry just being thick.

when you 1st open gimp you get 2 windows - the one on the left has a menu with 3 items on it - File, Xtns and Help. Choose file | open and then navigate to the image you want to work on. It will then open in a brand new window
