Hi,

I have never really done much flash photography as I mainly shoot motorsport in natural light. I do own a Nissin DI866 mk2 flashlight though.

A couple of nights ago I attempted to take some night time images of a static car. There was limited light coming from streetlights but as it was night time it was dark.

I mounted the flash to my 5D mk1, set it to Av mode and took some shots. When I looked at the they all had this foggy looking haze to them. Almost like I was shooting through clingfilm over the lens! lol Is this just caused by the flash over powering the shot and light reflecting back at the camera? I assumed due to the ETTL system the flash would put out the correct amount of light for the conditions?

Any pointers for this type of photography would be good as I would like to get more into static automotive work and I would like to make use of the flash more and not just be limited to daytime light.

Thanks in advance :)

Need to see a pic.

Image attached. It looks absolutely shocking!

I admit i`m not the best at photography but I promise not all my pictures come out this bad! lol

Good grief. I can only think that there's a very bright light out of shot top-right (or possibly something reflecting the flash back to camera?) and you have a protection filter on the lens.

I think you could be right on both accounts. There was a light to the right just out of shot which I guess explains the glare and the foggy effect could be the reflection of a direct flash on a freshly polished/waxed car. I just assumed the ETTL system would compensate for it but I guess in future bounce the flash so its not so direct? Definitely a lot to learn with this flash photography!

There's no bright light coming from the car. It must all be from that light out of shot.

If you have a protection filter on there, take it off and only use when actually necessary, and always use a lens hood.
