Ok so to this may sound a bit thick, but i've need to set the dpi of some images to 1400 max long x 1050 max high for a pi comp at the local camera club. So far all i can find about doing this is all about printing, which seem to suggest 300dpi. What i really want to know is, what is the best way/programme to do this with.

Unless your printing it the DPI doesn't matter. It's irrelevant to a digital file.

It's to do with the image projector.
Just size it within the pixel dimensions specified.. i.e. max x pixels tall and max y pixels wide.

DPI is not relevant.

Ok so i've read the rules on sending in files for projected images, and it says 1400 pixels max long x 1050 pixels high max, does this make more sense.

So that's not DPI its the image size in pixels, so as Alastair said export it from your photo software as that pixel size

Yes.

Note that 1400x1050 is not the same shape as the images which your DSLR produces. 1400x1050 is a ratio of 4:3, whereas your images are 3:2. So this means you have two obvious options:
1. Crop your image to a 4:3 ratio, and then resize to 1400x1050.
2. Leave your image uncropped and resize it to 1400x933.

Or of course you could crop to a different shape if you like, and then when you resize you just need to make sure that the dimensions fit. For example if you crop to a 16:9 (HDTV) ratio the pixel dimensions will have to be 1400x787, or if you crop of square then you will reduce to 1050x1050.

Thanks for the help and replies. I have now sorted it.
I used lightroom to set the parameters to the maximum values in export and its done the calculations for me.

Excellent. Once you've got your head around what you need to do, tools like Lightroom generally make it quite easy to do.
