Hi all,

I have searched the forums and couldn't find any thread already present that could help me. So here is my question.

Recently my EOS 5dMark 1 started showing Error 1 and then sometimes Error 99. This happened on the 50 1.8 MK2 and EF24mm2.8. An on/off sorted the problem. Till it got to the point that when using the 50mm prime when the shutter button would be pressed the shutter would go down but would not come back up. The only way to get it back up would be to detach the lens. This would happen almost every single time.

I tested the lens on my 300D and it worked all fine. So I send the camera to the Canon repair centre in Glasgow. They mentioned a repair cost of £350 for replacing the whole mirror assembly.

My question is whether someone else has come across a similar problem and what was the remedy as to me £350 sounds quite a lot. Hence I am looking for opinion.

Kind Regards,
Zeeshan

£350 is about right unfortunately, in my experiance. Repairs are not cheap. I had a 5D sensor replaced last year @ £750.00. Obviously a sensor and mirror assembly are different things but by the time you've done the maths - hourly rate, parts, testing, (paying for business overheads) etc. it adds up.

It may be worth going through your insurance if your excess waiver isn't too high.

Not sure if its any help but Err99 is the general default code for a communication error, it can be the contacts between lens and body. Worth cleaning with alcohol and cloth..... Plan b, insurance.

One thing. I have cleaned the contacts on the camera and all of my glass. They all work fine with the 300D but fail on the 5D. Funnily enough the 17-40L works fine on both the glass no probs. Unfortunately I have no other L glass to test but can't understand why is it working fine when the others have failed.
