I have got an idea to filter out a photo with just keeping the red content on some flowers and the rest of the picture being in mono.

Does anyone have a guide as to how to do it? i'm lost...

I'll be using Corel Paint shop pro Photo X2

Cheers

Duplicate the layer, turn the top layer black and white (don't use PSP so not sure exactly how) then either use layer masks or simply erase parts of the top layer to show the colour layer below.

Hmmmm, can you create layers from a JPEG? It seems to indicate not from the help file...

Problem is that i deleted the raw files by accident and only have the JPEG files now.

I have PSP X2 Ultimate and I have done a couple of these colour on mono images, here is one;

They are very easy to do just a bit long winded to explain but here goes.

  1. Open colour image in PSP
  2. On the Toolbar choose [Layers>New Raster Layer]
  3. In the New Raster Layer dialog box change the BLEND MODE to COLOR from the drop down box and make sure that OPACITY is set to 100% and that there a tick in the box that says LAYER IS VISIBLE.
  4. Choose the PAINT BRUSH tool, set HARDNESS to 100 & make sure the colour is BLACK.
  5. Make sure the NEW RASTER LAYER is selected in the LAYERS PANEL
  6. Paint over the image going around the part that you wish to leave as colour, you will see the effect straight away.
  7. Zoom in to allow yourself a better view of the coloured objects edges and keep changing the PAINT BRUSH size to get a fine edge around the coloured object.

Don't worry if you accidently paint over the image you wish to leave coloured, while the NEW RASTER LAYER is still selected choose the ERASER tool to rectify the mistake, when you do this you will understand.

When you are happy with the result, right click on the layer in the LAYERS PANEL and choose, MERGE>MERGE ALL(FLATTEN).

Your done. ;)

IMPORTANT REMINDER

You have to have the NEW RASTER LAYER selected in the LAYERS PANEL when working on the image or else it will not work.

Hope this helps you out. :)

I have PSP X1. The simplest way is to 'promote background layer' in the layers menu.
Then go to effects menu 'photo effects' - 'black and white film'.
Then use the eraser tool to rub out the black and white layer to let the colour through.

I forgot to say that obviously work on a copy of your image not the original but I guess you already know that. ;)

Also where a said that the PAINT BRUSH colour is BLACK, this is the FOREGROUND colour, the BACKGROUND colour makes no difference, so doesn't matter.

I guess there are other different ways to do this as well, we all just do it the way we are used to, thanks for the tip though. :)

Actually, seen as the way you explained had a lot less steps than the way I normally do it, I thought I would just try it out but there must be something different with PSP X2 Ultimate because when I do the last step of using the ERASER tool it just rubs right out to the transparent background.

Must be some change in coding from X1 to X2.

Sorry the first step should be 'duplicate' layer, not 'promote'.

Yes you can create layers with jpeg in photoshop/psp, but you can't save a jpeg with layers intact, you have to flatten it first, you can save the layers intact with PSD or tiff if you really need to (for further editing)

In the words or Dr Nick: "Hey, Thanks everybody" :D

I'll give it a good try tonight
