Hi there new to photography and using a prime lenses so here goes. I have recently got a Nikkor 50mm D lens for my D90 and having a few probs with focus. I could be standing with a distance between myself and a subject press the shutter button half way to get the the correct focus as i would on a 18-55 lens i have used with no probs then take the shot which is fine. Then a few moment later could take another pic at the same distance but on a bit of a angle then the motor will focus the lens again then will stop moving as if it's telling me its fine to take a shot with the green light in corner etc but when i take a pic its all out of focus and blurred. So is there something i'm doing wrong or is it a problem with the lens or camera? please help

Are you shooting wide open at 1.8:shrug:

The DoF at that apeture is very thin and may be the cause of your OOF shot. Try doing a few test shots with the camera mounted on a tripod and usiong a shutter release and see if you get the same problems.

Yeah i have tried test shots all day with it wide open and smaller aperture. It just looks like its out of focus rather than too much aperture blur etc. Its kind of like if you were using a 18-55 and had it zoomed to 55 then got to close to something the camera couldn't focus properly on the if that makes sense to you. It also doesn't do it all the time so i can't figure it out.

Are you using a single focus sensor or wide field focussing which uses an array of sensors? If you're using the latter the camera may be settling on a subject with a sensor that isn't in the middle, i.e. it's focussing accurately but not necessarily where you expect it to.

Oh what do you mean by single focus sensor how can i find that out please?

sorry did you mean single point focus? as i did have it on dynamic area focus?

Sometime's I get this too with my d90 and 50mm 1.8, I sent it off to be repaired so I will tell you if it's still got the same problem when it get's back.

If you're using dynamic area focus have you got the camera to show which focus point it is using? Could be that it's found a better target than the one you expect.

When testing a lens you really should have the camera set to single point focus and use the centre one - it's the most accurate.

I always use single point focus, though I don't always use the centre one, never knew it was more accurate! Will remember that for future!
