Help with 400D

OK folks, I've only had my 400D about 8 hours and I'm confused already!
I seem to have managed to accidentally set some kind of focus or exposure lock and can't clear it.
The autofocus works fine in the full auto mode, I half press the shutter and it focuses but in any of the 'creative' modes I have to press the * button to make it focus and it then stays at that focus whether I half of fully press the shutter afterwards. From reading the manual I get the impression that in these modes half pressing the shutter should usually trigger the autofocus. I have found various bits in the manual and threads on here about how to set the focus lock but none on how to go back to the standard setting! It doesn't seem to reset itself after I've taken a shot.
I have tried clearing the settings and it hasn't made any difference and I am shortly going to resort to taking the battery out but that seems a bit drastic!
So, go on then, tell me what obvious thing I am missing please before I permanently resort to that nice easy green square mode!!

If you put the camera in a manual set up mode (Av, Tv etc) and then push menu, go across to settings (1 or 2 i cant quite remember) then down to custom functions.... make sure the lens lock and exposure lock is set to 0 (off)

Thank you so much!! Have set the exposure lock to zero and problem solved, I can go to sleep now and stop poking the camera, I'd never have found that (even with the manual and the 400D guide from PhotoPlus I wasn't getting far!). This is going to be a serious learning curve

no problem There are some great features in custom functions! Ive only really used two of them so far and thats the noise reduction and the mirror lock up function.
