Help, why have I got a spot in my pics?

Just when I was getting the hang of my D40 with 18-200 lens I noticed a spot on all my pics... It shows up best against blue/pale backgrounds. First I wiped the filter to check there wasn't a droplet on it. then i rotated the filter but no next photo it was still there.. Is this apocylptic (sp?) or sortable.... My kit is second hand so no warranty:(

Almost certainly a dust bunny on your sensor.

search for sensor cleaning.
 
Its a spot of dust on your sensor, try giving it a good hard puff with a rocket blower if you have one! If that doesn't shift it there are a few good threads on here regarding sensor cleaning but be careful :)
 
Dust by the looks of things. Nothing to worry about really, a bit of cloning and it'll be reet. There was a thread on here with some much dirtier sensors than that not so long back!! :D

Or try not to worry about it. Most likely it will end up in a sky which is easy to clone or in some detail where you wont notice it.

In fact, i've had dust bunnies that I swear disappeared by themselves due to the in camera sensor cleaning or whatever. Dont worry unless it is causing a problem.

The low pass filter is just behind the mirror. As per the manual, raise the mirror, tilt the camera so the opening is facing down, insert rocket blower and.....blow :D

Make sure you don't let the actual rocket blower touch the filter though
 
The filter is the multicoloured bit that you see when the mirror moves out of the way.

Be careful doing that, if there is any dust there you could just end up blowing all sorts of crap into the lens body....
 
The shutter needs to be open also. I'm not familiar with the D40 but there must be a procedure in the manual telling you how to do it.
 
It really is very, very easy. The first time you clean your sensor it seems kinda scary, but once you've done it, you'll wonder what you were worried about! :)
 
Find sensor cleaning in the menu, press the shutter and that flat screen looking thing staring back at you from inside is the sensor with the filter over it.

I use dust aid dry pads from Calumet and although they are £60 a tin, I can clean both my cameras a dozen times for that. Bargain really, especially since I'm such a mucky pup! :)
 
that looks like a very very very small spec of dust, as it seems to have produces a nice circular distortion :) have you got dust off image capability on your camera? you can use that then apply it to your shots there after. you need to shoot in RAW ***.

or get the blower and sensor cleaning kit :)
