help - water damaged negatives

Hello - asking for a friend who is struggling with recent flood damage. Historic and irreplaceable photo albums have been destroyed and the negatives are completely soaked. What is the best course of action to recover the negatives?

A gentle wash by hand and hang up to dry in a dust free place as you can find (bath rooms were popular back in the day) Dont use hot water as it softens the gel layer. A little spot of soap in the water should help (I've used fairy liquid with no issues)
