help required for b&w with rainbow edited

hi all,

in September i went to the New Forest and took a landscape shot of a rainbow. i know this isnt the most original of ideas but i wanted to convert to b&w and then leave the rainbow in colour. I have elements 7, but am not hugely familiar with it and ive done little or no image editing in the past (due to two laptops failing on me):bang:.

what would your advice be to get the desired result? should i convert to b&w and then use the smart brush to re-apply to colour to the rainbow? or should i take on and learn my nemesis = layers? ive never worked with Layers and wouldnt know where to start.

duplicate the layer, convert to black & white, then use the eraser to delete the part over the rainbow to bring the colour back.
