Hello,

I'm wondering if anyone may be able to help me with trying to break down the editing on a particular style of shoot. The examples I have are Wes Ellis from Rooster Teeth, and particularly his 70s styled shoots. Examples can be found here: View: https://imgur.com/a/UbWWHbA

I understand most of the common tools used in photo editing but my usual work (sports photography) doesn't require any real "styling". I'm really drawn to this style of work (another example is the moving shadows series from https://www.instagram.com/gboxcreative/) and its something I'd like to try and learn.

Could anyone point me in the right direction? Most of the tutorials I have found on YouTube focus on the color toning (which is a large part) but still dont give the "flat" sort of feel that I'm taking from the images.

Thanks!

This will be interesting if anyone can come up with photos that look just like that, i would wager that was sent to a pro photoshop wizkid at cost but what do i know lol

I think this calls for a competition. Post one of yours at a decent size and I'm game for seeing what I can do. Anyone else?

I'm very unstructured in my processing, my first stab might be to select the subject, which is a vile task, (unless you have shot against a background) paint in the background with a very lightly textured brush, then TIFF it into darktable and play around with filmic and local contrast. Might work, if not try another line!

Easy enough to replicate that style in Photoshop - I may give it a go :)

RESPECT THE NO-EDIT FLAG PLEASE
You might also try GIMP, Cartoon and Softglow in Filters, Artistic might work.

MOD EDIT: PLEASE RESPECT OTHER MEMBERS WORK AND IF THEIR PROFILE SAYS NO EDIT, DON'T EDIT OR POST THEIR IMAGES

I haven't taken a photo ready for this style yet, I wanted to get the knowledge so that I could plan a shoot for it really!

I have had a go though, using this stock photo: https://unsplash.com/photos/Qaj-UT2FH4Q

This is my go (the noise seems to have gone crazy when I've exported it as a jpeg, wasnt like that on the raw!)

Solid colour background, with a pattern overlaid and a shadow painted in. Curves (RGB and into the blues and reds), Brightness/Contrast and some noise to the cut out figure.

To me, she looks a bit more 70s (albeit very good) than 50s. Try downloading darktable, it's not perfect but a lot of the modules are seriously clever. Always amazes me how much work goes into something given away for free.....

NO NEED TO BE A SARCASTIC ARSE ABOUT IT, YOU BROKE THE RULES AND WERE ASKED TO REMOVE, DIDN'T AND STAFF NEEDED TO GET INVOLVED.
Oh dear I am so very sorry I promise never ever to do it again, I am very very sorry if I offended anyone in such a serious way and will never ever do it again. Please forgive me for I have done something very wrong.
ENDS. For immediate release.

I rest my case - rules are rules - if they don't suit you then maybe find another forum

@dweeble - I suggest you apologise, this time without the heavy sarcasm, and in future just check peoples profile and if they allow their imagery to be butchered by others before posting.

you've now had 2 warnings and you're on a bit of a shaky nail with respects to further transgressions and your continued posting priv's so think carefully before any further posts.

please note the rule about not moaning about moderation. i've typed this in lower case as to not offend your sensibilities...
I'm sorry, I am struggling to get my head around this. I accept I didn't notice the "don't edit my images" line. If I had I would of course have used a different image. Perhaps my apology would have had a different tone if the message pointing out my transgression had been a little less short and grumpy?

And I wasn't actually asked to remove the edits, I would of course have happily done so if I had been..

But I think "butchered" is perhaps rather a strong and emotive word, even if my efforts didn't please some people.

I've always found Talkphotography a warm friendly and supportive place (and it usually is) compared to some other sites. If I was wrong in that, I will be very sad (genuinely). But not distraught.

from the rules you signed up to when you joined

Editing other member's photos
  • If they haven't ticked their 'Yes' box in their profile, don't do it!
  • If they have, then you go nuts, but don't ruin it or post it anywhere else but the same thread.

and

Conduct and behaviour
  • Don't swear. Don't be offensive. Be polite. Don't bore everyone with drivel. Don't moan about moderation.
  • Post in English.
  • If you think someone needs to be reminded of the rules, report it to the mods and leave them to deal with it. If you retaliate then you'll be treated the same, regardless of who started it.
  • If a moderator posts with an instruction, don't ignore it.
  • Teensy bit rude? Shouldn't be viewed by kids or anyone at work, use the "NSFW" thread prefix.
