My daughter's Compaq CQ56 crashed recently and I have just about got it running again - however I cannot get the wireless connection to function.

The disc has a recovery partition which restore the machine to its factory settings but I can't track down the original discs which came with the machine - I am furious with myself because I am normally very careful these

I've tried numerous methods but can't get the machine to boot from the recovery partition so wondered whether any kind TP'ers had a copy of an HP or Compaq recovery disc I could borrow so I can restore the original settings

Thanks

Does the device appear in Device Manager, do the shortcut keys to turn wireless on and off have any effect? Is there a hardware switch? Does it list wireless networks but you can't connect?

There seems to be a problem with the wireless adapter and none of the drivers I have downloaded will work. It appears in the device manager but says there is an issue with it

There is a key and a light indicating the wireless function is enabled but this glows orange not green indicating there is a problem

Does it appear in device manager? What is the operating system?

See above re device manager - sorry was editing my response when you typed your :)

It is running Windows 7 64 bit

Can you right click on it and uninstall? and then try again.

Done that - tried everything so need to resort to a complete reset from the recovery partition

which version of the CQ56 is it, there should be another 3-5 digits as theres about 20 different model numbers

Neil

Will check when I get home and let you know

Thanks

Dave

I would advise you to have another root about the HP/Compaq website.

The wireless generally needs software and drivers.

I've tried various drivers there to no avail so I suspect there is something more major to it - may even be a hardware failure but I want to completely rule this out by doing a 'factory reset'

Connect it to the router with ethernet cable and it should find the driver.
If still no joy find the wireless in device manager, note the exact name of it, and you should be able to locate the driver on HP site and install manually.
If the wifi is Atheros AR9285 like mine, here's the drivers in a zipped folder.

that doesnt always work, also sometimes they have generic names when drivers arent installed.

Best to search on the hardware IDs reported.

Device Manager->right click on failing device and select Properties->Details->Hardware IDs and you'll have something like: USB\VID_045E&PID_075D&REV_0105&MI_00

If you google the VID_ and PID_ it will (should) tell you what drivers you really need.

Didn't get a chance to try the various suggestions last night but will do so over the next couple if days

Really appreciate the help though
