hi there just wondering if you guy's could give us some tip's on produceing my pic's when i get home. my main problem is on the computer. i shoot in raw and the play with them then save them to jpeg but when ever i do this then look back at them they look really grainy and not like the did before in there raw state i have some pic's i want to get printed but dont want to waste my time if they come out wrong.
any would be really great

It may be that you are over sharpening the images and/or over compressing the jpeg image.

Apply only the minimal amount of sharpening, is any is needed, and keep the jpeg file as high as possible. A crude rule of thumb is the JPEG image shouldn't be smaller than 10% of the original file or larger, so a RAW file , decompressed at 30 Mb (i.e camera pixel resolution x3) shouldn't be smaller than about 3Mb, prefferably bigger.

As an experiment try saving one or two images as TIFF files and see if you still have the problem. If so it may be with the sharpening
 
I Dont Sharpen My Images I Dont Think I Have Found The Correct Way Yet. And I Always Save It To Best It Can Be Save At. Ill Look In To It A Bit More Try A Few Thing's.

A lot depends on the image you are processing - images which are underexposed but then "recovered" in PP can show quite heavy noise, the same effect can happen sometimes when adding more saturation - might be useful to post an example or two ?

I didn't think PS7 would handle images from a D80? maybe I'm wrong. Are you opening the RAW images in another software package and then handing them off to PS7?
 
nope i downloaded something of the net to open them with ps7 i have get the photo's from the camera well the raw photo's as if it was a usb card because nothing else will download them
 
sorry not with you. i get thephotos on to my comp then the only way i can look at them or do anything with them is through PS7 it take ages.

It would be a good idea to rule out the conversion program you're using.

Go to the Adobe web site and download a 30 day trial of Lightroom. It's version 1.4.1 that's the latest.

Load up the program, then in the library module use the import tab, to import some images.

Next go to the develop module ( select it from the menu tabs at the top of the screen)

Highlight a couple of images and export them as tiffs. ( File>Export, or Cntrl+Shift+E)

Now have a look at them and see if they are better than you have been getting.

Lightroom will apply a very small amount of sharpening on output but nothing to worry about. If the results do look a lot better then you may need to look at another RAW converter. Don't get to attached to Lightroom unless you've got £200

On the subject of being able to view the RAW files, try typing the following into search engine - (I used google) "RAW viewer windows" It will give you a link to several RAW viewers. Microsoft has one, but the link would not work from this forum. I'm not sure which ones support your camera however.
