i have got to submit my work tonight for my c and g level 1.

the only thing i am struggling with is depth of field, i gotta pick an object and photograph it with the background in focus and then again with background out of focus.

I cant do the latter...the background is always in focus.

What am i doing wrong??
 
which camera are you using?
 
Use a open aperture F2.8 or the lowest f: you can get it that still fails put more distance between your subject and the background.

how far from the subject is good? how far sholud the background be or does it matter?
 
Further the better really, depends how small an aperture you can get down to. try putting the object on a table at one end of a room, getting down to its level, so basically the wall at the opposite end is the 'background' ... or if you have one, do the same in the back garden... metres rather than feet away if you see what I mean.

Sorry, dont want to give advice in case its wrong but just wanted to say that Ive just had my level one course delivered - im a bit nervous about starting it. Once you have had your questions answered, give me a shout and let me know how you are getting on. It would be good to have a section on here for those who are currently learning - to enable us to get support from each other! Or is there already.....?

If not, Ill moderate it! ;-)
 
With the lens wide open (low f:number) and focusing from a few feet away your focal plane should be about foot or so.

it worked!!

but have just remembered i was supposed to do a panning excercise...subject in focus...background blurred...but its too dark now...poo poo poo!!!
