I don't think that you have done anything wrong. What you will probably need to do is take 2 shots, 1 exposing for the moon and 1 for the beach then merge them in PS
What Gary said! In exposing for the foreground the moon and sky has over-exposed. Two separate exposures is the answer. Alternativly, it would be pretty easy to clone out that moon altogether and replace it with another.
But if you still have the RAW file, surely you can adapt and save a file for the highlights, then do the same again so you have another file for the shadows? I'm sure you can do it, then merge the two - just don't ask me how!
