Hi all,

I'm after getting my sony HVL-F42AM flash off the camera and trigger it wirelessly, any recommendations? Budget is around £50?

Thanks

Matt

Cheapest solution is to use the built in Sony wireless system - uses the pop-up flash as a master to optically trigger remote Sony flash units - full TTL, etc

The downside is that the pop up flash may contribute to the overall lighting, and that the remote flash must be able to 'see' the pop up flash fire (this will work bounced off a white wall, etc, but gets less reliable as the route gets more convoluted!).

The next alternative is to use radio triggers - I use Pixel Kings, which are not cheap, but give full TTL & HSS, and have been happy with them.

You can go with cheaper triggers, but lose HSS (or are just manual only, for the cheapest ones).

Bear in mind that with the 42 you'll need to fire the flash on-camera before using it off-camera (with either a trigger or Sonys optical triggering. If the flash goes into "sleep mode" you'll need to remount it on the camera and fire it to wake it up again.

This limitation only applies to the 42. All other current Sony flashes will work off-camera without first having to fire them on-camera.

What body are you using it on? Higher level bodies (7 series and above) also have the option of using a 43, 58 or 60 as a trigger, giving ratio control for up to 3 groups of remote flashes.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies , the body I will be using it with is the a33, there are some radio triggers on eBay but I'm clueless on which to go for :/

Thanks

Matt
