Hi Guys,
I use my camera for mainly taking holiday/social shots plus taking photo's of my kids at athletic events, i'm looking at getting a zoom lens to get better photo's of them, question is which one. Ideally i would love a 70-200mm F4 L but they seem to be 2nd hand over £300, but i have seen Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Zoom Lens for just over £100. Do you really get what you pay for, is the cheaper one worth it or is it just a waste of cash and i'd be better off in the long run with the L series. Thanks for any help, the camera they will be sat on is 550d

You'd always be better off with an L lens :P. But it all depends on what you want to spend. The IQ on the 70-200 f4 is amazing, you wouldnt be disappointed. It's alot better than the 75-300. Only down side, its short the extra 100mm.

Personal preference for me, is go for the L lens if you can afford it.

I had a 75-300 f/4-5.6 III lens when I first started out with dslrs. It was the worst lens I've ever had and I didn't get any useable photos with a 550D. If you can get a 70-200 f4L non IS you'll find it really worth the money. The IQ from it is fantastic and for around £300-325 second hand it's great value. If you still find you're wanting the extra reach with a 200 you could always get a 1.4x converter to go with it.

Also, the Sigma and Tamron 70-300's might be worth investigating. There's been some good reviews of both recently and you might find them more affordable.

Have you tried the 70-300 IS?

How much do they go for?

Canon EF 70-300 f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens the cheapest on ebay is around £650 with the majority going around the £800+

I've not tried a 70-300 IS, when I saw how bad my 75-300 was I sold it and got a Tamron 28-300 VC as all I had was the kit 18-55 IS. I've since sold the Tamron when I updated my lenses for better ones but would like to try another on my 5D3.

I've had a EF-S 55-250 IS before I got my 5D3 and that was a great lens on my 7D. It only cost £110 second hand and the IQ was great and it was a great length and companion for an 18-55 IS.

I've got a friend coming over later and bringing his Canon 70-300 L to try it on my 5D3, hopefully with the updated firmware by the time he arrives, as he wants to see how good the AF speed is with a 1.4x converter connected.

Try a 55-250 IS. Great lens for IQ and bang for buck. If you're planning a trip down full frame, consider the 70-300 IS or 70-200L

Have a look at the Sigma 18-250. Not too expensive and decent results.

I have a ef-s 55-250 IS as well and as others above state, its a very capable budget lens, personally if your baulking at the thought of hundreds of pounds for a lens but want something 'decent' i'd plug for it.
