I had a slight accident with my camera a few months ago, basically I managed to rip my tripod out of the bottom of the camera. I have stripped the thread from inside the 'screw' bit where the tripod attaches.

Do any of you good folks have any suggestions as to how to repair it, or are there any gizmos that can be glued on??

Thanks in advance.

Cliff.

You don't state which camera you have, but assuming it is a reasonably valuable one, I would strongly suggest speaking to the manufacturer.

Hi Cliff, looking at the bottom of my 3 Nikons and Fuji X10, they are all seperate to the camera body. I would suggest you get a quote/ send it in for repair to your camera manufacturer.

Thanks Bob,

It's not valuable (in comparison to some) it's a Fuji Finepix S5700.

It's all i can afford at the moment and I like it anyway, so I'd really like to get it repaired...:(

Cheers Rob,

I've just had a very close look, never noticed before, but it looks like the plate with the thread in is indeed a seperate piece, there looks to be 4 tiny screws holding it in.

I might be lucky here...

Many thanks to you both.

Cliff.

Keep an eye on fleabay for a faulty camera going cheap, then you could substitute the part. Might be cheaper than a replacement part from the manufacturer

If the thread has been stripped it may be to either.

Get it retapped by recutting the thread with a tap set.

Or you can get it drilled oversize and then tapped and then helicoiled.

That's if it not possible to replace the tripod screw in plate.

Any decent engineering place should be able to do this and it should not cost too much.

Oh heck, I wasn't trying to be elitist, which on re-reading my answer may be construed as such. Sorry.

What I meant was that if you camera was very old or a very basic model, it may not be economical to repair. With your camera it would be well worth contacting Fuji. Link below:

 Although the thread is a 1/4 inch whitworth... not easy to come across as an helicoil or thread insert. :gag:

You may be able to create a thread with epoxy, take a 1/4 thread bolt, oil it so the epxy doesn't stick to it, then insert both epoxy and bolt into the hole, let it set, unscrew bolt and hopefully you should have a new thread. It may not be as robust as metal but should be OK.

Actually, reding some of the above replies, I had an idea... I might be able to find a nut of the same size thread of the tripod, glue it to the base of the camera. Won't look pretty but should work...??

A good strong epoxy glue should do, what do you chaps reckon?

Will probably work but don't use Superglue as it doesn't have good adhesive properties in shear - which is what you excert when tightening/loosening the tripod.

I'd still get a quote for replacement part , I doubt that it will cost mega bucks .
