Afternoon all.

I've just joined up here, heard this site is full of helpful and friendly people so am looking for some advice.

I'm very much into Motorsport, and for the past few years have had a Nikon D60 with just the basic 18-55mm lens, which I've use mainly for Moto X.

It's done the job absolutely fine, but I am currently very into Superbike racing and next season I'm looking at following it for the year, so am looking to upgrade.

Can anybody give me any advice on preferably a lens or even a new camera which isn't super hi-tech but something basic enough for a novice to use, that isnt extra expensive but is 'good enough' and will do the basic job of photos for my own personal use.

Distance is the key I guess, I will be further back from the track than what I'm used too.

Any help and advice will be much appreciated.

Thank in advance,
Adam.

Hi adam
The sort of lens that would be good is a AF-S VR 70-300 f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED try and stay away from the super zooms (18-200) as they will not be as quick focusing. check out the second hand market as people often upgrade from this type of lens to the pro range which is a lot, lot more money. As for a camera there are lots of D90 on the second hand market. It has all the auto modes as well as the manual

Hello Nick,

Thank you, you've been a great help. I've searched the Lens you mentioned and it sounds great, just the sort I need by the sounds of it. All the letters are a bit confusing, I'm sure I'll get my head around them eventually.

It's a little bit more than I wanted to pay, new - but like you said second hand would be manageable and I've already found a few.

Out of interest, is there any similar by Tamron or Sigma which are the same design but maybe slightly cheaper that you could bring my attention too?

Thanks again for your help.

The Sigma 150-500 is a good lens for Motorsport where you need range. This was at Silverstone.

Thanks for the info Ken - I've just had a quick look but that looks slightly out of my price range at the minute. Maybe one day down the road. Any others you could suggest?

Another vote for the 70-300 VR for motorsport. However, the reduced depth of field achievable by a 70-200 f/2.8 can help reducing the impact of fencing. Extra cost though - 70-300 VR is probably the best VFM solution.

for circuit racing from speccy side a 70-300 is most versatile. If it does longer, thats a bonus. Buy the best your budget permits and a secondhand good lens is probably better than a cheap and nasty new one.

I can't thank you all enough for your input and advice. The 70-300 VR sounds like the one I need to go for. Once I can get on to the classifieds, I'll see what I can find. I have no issues going for a second hand one.

I may be asking more questions soon.

Cheers again.

Just make sure that if you buy from mpbphotographic, the lens they advertise is the lens they send. I recently bought a VR from them and they sent me a non VR. When I pointed this out I was told "sorry, we'll refund your postage". Looking back on it I probably should have demanded the VR that was advertised quoting trading standards etc. I'll know for next time if I ever use them again.

Mat, somewhere on their site will be (almost certainly) the letters E&OE - errors and omissions excepted - nobody's perfect and mistakes do happen - galling, maybe but they're a fact of life! Besides, the only way to make 100% sure they pack the right lens is to stand over them and watch, in which case you may as well pick it up in person and avoid P&P charges!

You're right, I know. It's just bloody irratating when you looking forward to one thing and receive another, especially when I paid a few quid more for the VR. I thought I'd bagged (an elusive thesedays) bargain. I'll put it down to character building!
