Oooops.................Meant help needed as i'm only a wildlife tog....., I've been asked to do some programme shots for our local panto however i have not got a clue on lighting. My missus says her brother can supply the lights and background but no umbrellas, Do i need umbrellas or will a couple of lights be enough and against a black background how do i position them. I have till december to sort myself out.
Also what lens, Is the 70-200 F2.8 a good lens for this kind of thing?
So many questions

Er, so after reading that I don't quite understand why you need help from a wildlife tog? Either way it doesn't sound like you're used to working this sort of gig or have any of the required equipment so it might be worth your while getting in a dab hand to help you out.

I suspect he meant help needed for a wildlife tog (as I know he posts in Birds!)... but it would be handier to have lighting in the title ;)

Strobist is a good read to begin with, it explains the basics of lighting and how to go about it with minimal kit :)

white bed sheet (aka giant diffuser), or a $4 umbrella from china should arrive in time. check strobist, it's a great site with some great tutorials on.

simple solution: bash one light onto a white wall with a stofen on it, exposed 1 stop above the subject to nuke it to white, and light subject (standing about 1.5m away from the white wall) from 45 odd degrees through a brolly or hung up bedsheet.

70-200 is a great lens for it, leave it at 2.8-5 or so, and focus on the eyes...

end of the day, they'll probably run small and in black and white to keep printing costs down anyway...

Hi, I think i'm ok for most of the equipment, Got a 5D mk2, 70-200 F2.8, 550ex flash and a couple of lights, Surely that will get me started?
