Can anyone help please? I need to set up my 5Diii to shoot video to the CF card and photos to the SD card and I can't figure out how to do it. I can set it so that all files record to one or the other but can't see if I can set it to distinguish between format (i.e. movies on one, photos on the other).

Anyone help?
Thanks!!

I looked for such a setting but now no exists!

You have to do this manually....which is relatively quick via the Q menu and using the multi controller.

Not a perfect solution but it works if needed for as I shoot very little video. Oh, this avoid the card being used for anything else make sure to configure the card control menu not to auto switch to the other card for stills shooting.

FWIW I use the CF for stills and the SD for video as required.

You cant record video to the SD card directly so i would set up the camera to record images to both. This way the SD card gets the images no matter what, and the CF card gets the video.

Writing to both cards simultaneously can be an issue should you need to take advantage of a high write speed CF because the write will run at lower speed of the SD slot even if that SD card is higher speed.

Cannot recall the difference in slot speeds but this was remarked on when the 5D3 came out.

Yes, this is correct but i dont recall anyone actually finding it a problem. I think a lot of people were up in arms about the fact the SD card slot would limit the write speed if both slots were being used, but i got the feeling it was never a real world issue for most.

So I can use only one or write to both but not put video on one and pics on the other?

Only AFAIK by the method I describe above but I stand to be corrected.

Hmm, it does seem that way. It's not something I've really looked in to before but after having a play with mine I was surprised you can write video to the SD card. Not sure why I thought you couldn't.

The video can be recorded on any card but the 'natural' configuration is that it will record to the primary card then if set to continue onto second card auto switch to that other card for both stils and video.

Have you found another way other than the one I describe to isolate stills and video?

According to the manual video will get recorded to whatever card slot is designated as the main one so no, I can't see anyway of splitting the two.
I'm not sure what the disadvantage of writing both image (say very small jpg) and video to one card is but that's the only way I can see of doing it and saving a bit of space.
