Yes
I've always used my Canon EOS 1000fn and as far as I knew the red L on the mode dial basically stood for 'off'.

However, recently, it keeps taking snaps in my camera bag, because it won't turn off!

Pressing the shutter half way always meters the camera, and it's driving me bloody mad!

I don't know what to do, taking the battery out doesn't even turn it off...

Christ I wish I just had an EF fit manual camera.

Hi,
I can't help you much other than agrreing that yes the 'L' or Lock mode is supposed to turn the camera off.

My 500n is basically the same as your 1000fn and I leave mine on the 'L' setting when not in use.

The display still shows whether a film is loaded and how many exposures left.

Metering does not work in this mode or the shutter.

I am wondering if maybe yours got knocked or if moisture got in prehaps.

As for your 1000fn continuing to work without batteries, that is really odd, maybe it is posessed. lol.

Brilliant!

Thanks for the link AliB, most helpful :) I didn't think it should do that, DAMN.

I'd quite like to go fully manual KJEvans, but I want the EF mount.

I guess EF (mean electro focus) and fully manual don't really go together, do they!

I am guessing that your 1000fn works exactly the same as my 500n, the mode switch looks basically the same, so you could do some manual work with that.

On the EF lenses there is a button to switch between AF and MF and by setting the mode switch to M you are in manual mode.

Film, shutter and other settings can then be changed via the rotary knob behind the shutter release.

You will need to look through the manual for all the various options.

I use my 500n both manually when I have time to setup the perfect frame and on the various auto settings when I haven't time.

Oh, I understand that, what I mean is the days of the old Pentax ME style camera.

No autofocus, no automatic film winding, none of that garbage to go wrong.

You load the film manually, you set the exposure manually, you manually focus, you cock the shutter, you fire the shutter, you wind the film on, when you've finished the film, you wind it all back in!

I want an AK-47 of a camera, not a laser-guided-automatic-calibration-dual-missile-heat-seeking-grenade-launcher of a camera!

I see what you mean now, back to basics.

I have a Praktica Super TL that I use just for that purpose.

It is as old as me, weighs a ton but takes a beautiful photo.

Have a look.

It's just a case of monies atm!

Perhaps I'll start a new thread, a 'what traditional slr!' thread :P

Will make a change from the typical 'WHAT DSLR PLZ?' threads :p

Sounds like an excellent idea to start a thread about traditional slrs.

It would be interesting to find out what is the oldest slr that members are still using.

I have an ME super that I have never used. I bought it because I wanted the 50mm 1.4 that it had attached to it!

Edit: of is it a K1000D Super, I'll have to check when I get home now!!

Smarty Pants!!

It is an ME Super, with the 50mm 1.4 anyway.

You can pick up Zenits for less than a tenner on ebay with a lens! Then fast primes can be found for cheaps! My Zenit 11, 50 f/2, 135 f/2.8 and 200 f/3.5 cost less than £35 inc postage!

A mate of mine has a Zenit, got it given to him. Its got a long reaching lens, not sure what focal length. The rifle grip is amusing!!

Would that be th e Tair 3? Loook to be very nice lenses. lots of aperture blades. But preset which some people dont like.
