Im looking to upgrade my Nikon 300 f4 AFD in the near future. Now i want something which is faster to focus, something of f2.8 or f4 at the least, something longer might be great as it will be used for wildlife/birding.

I thought i had the chance of a Nikon 400 f2.8 but it didnt come off at the price i was originally told so 5k is out the question. My thoughts are around the following-

Sigma 500 f4.5
Nikon 300 f2.8
Sigma 300 f2.8
Sigma 120-300 f2.8

It needs to take a Kenko 1.4tc without problems with IQ etc.My ideal lens would be a Nikon 400 f2.8 or a 500 f4.Secondhand would be fine if i can get a lens in great condition and at a decent price.I hand hold most of the time.

Here is the order I would probably look at putting those lenses if you are considering them

Sigma 500 f4.5
Nikon 300 f2.8
Sigma 120-300 f2.8
Sigma 300 f2.8

I had the 120-300mm and it is a fine lens for birding being a 420mm F4. SUre, the 500 would be nicer but then again it is 1k more for a bit (OK, probably a lot) of extra sharpness, a bit less versitility and 80mm.

Honestly don't know - although a quick google search brought up this link which indicates you will have problems with AF

Personally I am kind of in the same dilemma. I had a 120-300 and for reasons I regret to this day I moved it on. NOw I am looking towards the big glass again the 500mm has appealed to me - but the lack of versitility it offers and now difficulties with a 1.4 puts me off again :( and I am in no position to drop 3k on a Canon version.
British weather = F2.8. Keep telling myself that.

I love my Nikon 200-400mm f4. Not sure if you fancy a zoom though. Works well with the 1.7 conv .
