This week I welcomed a Sigma 120-300mm back into the fold.
Today I discover that my lowepro mini trekker rucksack, while big enough to hold the camera/lens, is woefully inadequate for me.

So, time to start looking at bags (I also have a birthday coming up  )

My requirements are:
Hold my gripped 40D and 120-300 F2.8 lens (If it can hold it with hood attached - even better!)
Have a secure spot to attach my tripod and wimberley sidekick head that will still allow access to the bag when the tripod is in place - and will allow quick attaching and removal of said tripod to bag
Will still work fine and sit right with the tripod attached but camera / lens not in the bag.

Does such a bag exist or am I chasing the unknown?

Thanks - backpack only for me
Budget?
Well tbh i have not decided, I want to see all options

i have just the thing i hope got plenty of room for all you acceosries holds a tripod and you can buy add on

tamrac expedition 5x these have been going in the region of £50.00

i have one of these and only reason is accesories for me and to hold a heavy tri pod will be buying some big lenses shortly this is the reason i upgraded now rather than not have the money later on

this is just to give you a idea of what they are like if i find a link for a cheap on i will let you know

As most people add equipment, I would suggest buy bigger than you need now, it saves changing later.

I have the Tamrac Expedition 8 and it takes everything in my sig plus bits with room to spare.

Great bag.

A bit left of field maybe, but I use a Digital Holster for my 40D and 100-400mm L. Fits like a glove with hood reversed. There's a good 3in extra length when you unzip and extend the base. I think you might just squeeze a 120-300mm in there (probably without the hood).

The 50 model fits a taller body with winder attached. Very well made bags, clever designs.

Thanks for your input all.

I've had a look at all the bags suggested and I think this has set me on the right course. It seems that it is realistic to look for a bag that will take the 120-300 in 'ready to shoot' configuration (Hood in place).

I've ruled out the Tamrac expedition 5 as it just isn't big enough - it isn't much different in size to my mini trekker. The expedition 8 looks more the size top to bottom but there seems like too much space either side of the lens that will be empty.

Now, while looking at the digital holser 50 (bit small!) I came across the streetwalker series - look like good bags but I can't find reviews of them

The think tank system seems quite well thought out - like the camera over to one side for example.

Looking at the computrekker I was impressed, but the internals allow hood reversed only and I don't want to wase any space with a laptop compartment. However I then looked at the Nature Trekker - might be more like it! THen I looked at the Vertex 200 - also a good contender.

So I'm now down to: -
Thinktank Streetwalker / Streetwalker Pro
Lowepro Nature Trekker
Lowepro Vertex 200

Any other suggestions welcome and any views on the three bags above too...
Thanks again!

I use a naturetrekker for my D300 and 120-300 2.8. It goes in with hood and TC and body on (only just with TC, but it does!). However, I dont have a grip, and I dont know if it is deep enough for it.

Other than that it's a great option for the ready-to-shoot configuration. You do have to fully open the zip before it will slide out nicely though.

HTH. :)

just got a redsnapper y603 so i can let you know what thats like tommorow, im going to do a full review with pics as i havnt seen one yet :)

Thanks Joe - that is very useful. I didn't think of the 1.4 in place too!
Lowepro quote my mini trekker as being 12.5cm deep and the natur trekker as 15cm - and I squeeze my gripped 40D in the mini trekker so I expect depth is fine.

How do you find the tripod mounting on the nature trekker? do you think it would hold a top heavy tripod OK?

Thanks again
Richard

I dont tend to use the mounts for a tripod very often, but I use it regularly for a monopod. However, yesterday it was used with a 055 (alu version) + 804 tripod with no problems. I would imagine a heavier tripod would be ok, but I dont know for sure.

...Now, while looking at the digital holser 50 (bit small!)...

If the style suits you, I think it would fit. Just!

According to WEX the lens is 113x271mm and with the base extended (extra 8cm) there should be enough for the lens and camera + grip. The hood of my 100-400mm L is 115mm diameter, and that slides down okay right to the bottom. You would need to check the tripod mount.

But the digi holster is more for easy carrying and fast access than ultimate protection I think.

HTH.

I love my Vertex 300, its very stable with tripod attached.

I do like the style - but think tank suggest the maximum internal dimension is 36cm in length and my rig from end to end is just over 40cm.
It doesn't really fit my current needs but I am seriously considering one for the days I'm out doing motorsport - would be perfect for that!

Is it 40cm? I took the length of 271mm and added 65mm for the depth of the body  My bag is about 37cm max fully extended.

Dunno how the hood changes things, it'll be snug either way, but if it does fit the fixing screw should slide down one of the corners. I suspect you'd have to check the tripod collar.

I find it's a really handy way of carrying a big lens ready to go. It fits on a belt if you like it that way, Lone Ranger ;)

Jees, I wouldn't want that monster hanging off my belt!

I just stood the rig up on the hood and measured from the floor up - with the hood in place. It would squeaze in with the hood reversed which makes it a good lighweight storage bag for lens & camera. Tripod collar is the small one with a long arca swiis plate so again, should fit down a corner.

I loved using my lowepro topload aw with the 70-200 F2.8 - that type of bag will always appeal!
