Ok also posted in computer section. I am using Lightroom 4 with Elements 10 as one of the external editors.
Playing around with the external editor settings in preferences, (I know if you you don't know what you are doing leave alone, damage is done now).
Now when I go to Edit in, it comes up with
'Edit Photo with Adobe Photoshop Elements Editor'
The photo appears in Elements but none of the tools work it just says
'Could not perform the requested action because of a program error' the 2 buttons in box 1st one is 'convert depth' 2nd is 'cancel'
If I persist I just get program error.
The image is there just can't do any thing with it.
If I open a image straight into Elements from the hard drive it works fine.

I'm not familiar with that error message, but I do know that there's very little you can do in Elements 10 with a 16-bit image. It looks like you've got your 'Edit in' entry set up to pass a 16-bit image into Elements. Try changing it to 8-bit and see if the problem goes away.

If you ever find yourself in Elements with a 16-bit image, go to Image, Mode, 8 Bits/Channel to convert it.

I had forgotten most of my images on that day were taken with my D90 but half way through swapped to my D300 which is set up for 16 bit image:bang:
