I've just picked it up at a car boot for £5!!

There are no cables but it just uses a standard PC power cable and a FireWire connector so that's ok.

Is it possible to download the software to run it for free of is it going to cost me more for that than the scanner?

Any tips people can give would be greatly appreciated.

Get a copy of Vuescan. Yep it'll be more than a fiver. I think you can download a trial version.

It seems that if you contact Nikon they might be able to send you a copy of the Coolscan software but it will only be for an old OS so if you've got an old Mac running OS 10.1.5 I think or a PC running XP it should work or do what Trevor suggests and try VueScan

You've just got a £250 scanner for a fiver. Paying out for the software is a minor issue ;0)

That's what I thought, that's why I bought it. I knew they were expensive so what have I got to lose?

Believe it not I also picked up a plustek opticfilm 7300 with all its paraphernalia in a charity shop for £10 the other day!

I need to figure out which is better.

The Coolscan also has a roll film adaptor with it:-

Sell one of them and buy Vuescan with the profit to use on the other one, problem solved :0)

I've got its bigger brother, bought myself an old Mac Pro to go with it :) But still use VueScan as I like it.

I used one of these for ages - vuescan works very well with it. It's also worth using the film holders instead of the roll feeder - I find that curly film can be out of focus at the edges when using the auto feeder. Since it may well have been sitting around for a while, it might be worth cleaning the mirror. There're instructions here. I did it and it improved the contrast and reduced haloing, even though my mirror wasn't as dusty as the one on the webpage.

Great bargain. Fingers crossed it still works!
