I desperatley need your help!

Tonight I've been invited to take the camera along to the private preview of the David Sheppard Wildlife Artist of the year awards in The Mall Gallery in London and don't want to leave without some great shots, but, I don't shoot people (well never have before)...

It'll be my first time attempting to shoot people indoors and not sure I have the right kit! I have my 7D which is fine, a 50mm 1.8 but nothing between 50 & 100mm which I am guessing will be the ideal lenghts? I have been told flash is OK inside so will have the 430EX2 with diffuser on but am stuck.

I'll be shooting people, artists with their images and some big names there as well?

Any tips, pointers or comments would be greatly appreciated.

From what you say, I guess you are mostly taking event snaps, rather than setup portraits, yes? If that's the case, it's mostly a run and gun type scenario. Your 50mm and flash will be fine. If you are in 1 room venue, where the lighting is pretty consistent, work out the WB and exposure (with flash), and lock it all in manual mode. I'd be tempted to use about 1 stop under for ambient light. Stick your flash on TTL, and shoot quite close.

You'll be shooting quite wide open, so try to position the subjects on similar focus plane, and watch the DOF. You don't want 1 guest in focus and another one out.

Most importantly, don't look stressed. Be friendly, look happy (even if you are panicking like hell). That will draw out a better expression from the subjects you shoot.

Enjoy, and good luck :)

Thanks HB, will see how we go :) am under more pressure from myself really as one of artists is my mother and we all know that we don't want to upset one of those lol :)

I'll post some pics Friday when I get a chance to look at them all :) first feedback has been ok but struggled with the 50mm so was shooting mainly with the 100 end of the 100-400, desperately need something in the middle (another excuse for the 70-200 lol). Was definately an experience and a good night bar the guest speakers not turning up without giving any notice...

I've commented on the other thread. Hope I don't sound too harsh. These comments are all meant to encourage you, rather than negative remarks :)
