Hi

I've baught a Laslite HiLite and and was looking to light it with this flash kit. Link. I am using this as a starting point, with a plan to upgrade in the future when funds a better.

The only sticking point is,that I want to beauty dishes to light the the Hilite. I've not used the hilite before and I'm sure that it is possible to use the flash without the dishes, I am concerning about control the light from the flash gins.

Has anyone found a supply of beauty dishes that will fit these lights? I've asked the suppliers and they weren't much use.

Thanks for your help in advance.

There are a few ways of lighting a HiLite, but with beauty dishes is not one of them - just use the standard reflectors.

You won't find many supporters of the flash kit in your link, though they are capable of good results, with caveats. One drawback is there aren't many good quality modifiers available in that fitting. Suggest you look at Lencarta or Elinchrom, and spend a bit more if you're serious about studio work - which by the sounds of it, you are

Hi Richard

When you say standard reflectors, are you refering to the casing that comes with the flash units to protect the bulbs? If you are, I think I've just spotted the errors of my ways, having looked at the manual again. :bonk::bonk::bonk::bonk::bonk:

Yes, with those particular heads the 'standard' reflector is built in so just use as they are are.

Aim the light towards the back of the HiLite, usually a bit towards the far side of centre works best. Then 'flag' the front of the head so that no light can fall directly on the front of the HiLite - bit of card and BluTack or summat. Should be okay if you turn the modelling lamp off.

There's always a bit of trial and error involved getting these things just right, but time well spent. Lots of threads on white backgrounds and HiLites etc, but be warned it's not an easy technique to do well, but very easy to do poorly. A HiLite will help get you off to a good start though.

Hi Richard

Thanks for the advice.

I've done a some reading around the HiLite and there's plenty of different ways of lighting them. It's going to take a little trail and error to get correct but once the done, the highlight will get me off to a good start. :D

I think its about finding a way to get it to work for you.

I've just ordered the lights, so look out for some pictures at the end of next week.
