I've somehow managed to get the thread from my polarising filter stuck on the end of my lens. The glass bit of the filter has come out & just the thread is left.

Tried to grab with pliers, but I'm worried about scratching the lens (17-55 f2.8)

Help:help:

Try a thick rubber band round it - will give you more purchase.

Alternatively you can buy a filter removal tool, but 9/10 the rubber band works.

Find a postman, they always seem to have too many :D

Is the bit that rotates still attached too?

Genius Steve, rubber gloves solved the problem. Another thing to add to the camera bag:D

A tip I read somewhere was to run a 2B pencil around the start of the filter thread. This lays a small amount of graphite down that acts as a lubricant to help keep it free from locking up.

Also when using a filter, put it on to just pinch tight, then ease it back a bit. It wont go anywhere

Pressing it flush down on a mouse mat or better still the grippy mats you have under rugs or on car dashboards, not to much pressure obviously. Problem with squeezing it with your hands is you can distort it and thats why it jamming. The pencil trick works too for when you do get it off.

+1 - this is how I got around it before.
Although if the bit of the polariser that rotates is still attached it's not so useful
