Help ! Elements 8

I have been using Elements 8 for over a year but my on last few imports of raw photos I have no longer a thumbnail when I open the catalog.
I have reinstalled Elements but no thumbnails, only an egg-timer logo.
Clicking on an egg-timer logo will open the photo !
I am not aware that I have changed anything anywhere else on my laptop, running windows XP.
Can anyone suggest anything that I can try to see the thumbnails again.
For info I am using a canon 7D.

Have since discovered that if I have only five or less thumbnails in a row then they will open very slowly. But after five rows have arrived scrolling back to the top reveals only egg-timer logos again and then they re-open slowly again !
All the tasks assciated with Elements sem to have been slowed down considerably !
Have run an infection check, but still no return to normal speed.
Any ideas please ?

Are you running short of disk space? What's your memory size/usage like?

Were you using the same camera all along? the 7d produces a fair size raw image. It could be a lot of things, even a bad stick of ram, scratch disk ok? has anything changed?

Not familiar with Canon, but I use PSE8 and only get a thumbnail with the raw files if I have my cameras set to shoot RAW + jpeg (I opt for the lowest resolution jpeg since it is only used to see what is in the RAW file before deciding to open or discard it).

I bit the bullet and re-booted back to factory settings and started again from scratch.
Amazing how much there is to re-install !
But all is well again with PS8 running at normal speed, thumbnails all appearing as quickly as they ever did !
