Hi, I hope this is the right place to post this I am looking to purchase my first camera, I have decided a mirrorless would perhaps suit me more than a dslr and think either the canon eos m100 or the sony a5100 would be a good first option for me,
I am looking to photograph things such as wildlife, food, people, and also be able to use it for my social media as well as for some vlogging
if I enjoy it I would consider upgrading the camera body at a later date, so would be nice to use this begginner camera to explore lenses etc
any help deciding would be greatly appreciated thank you,

thank you I have considered both the fuji cameras and the panasonic gx800 I figured the other two where better options because they had more megapixels - I'm a complete novice so when buying my usual point and shoot camera I would often use megapixels to judge

To be honest, mp is probably one of the least important spec of a modern camera. As long as it's around 12mp and above it'll be fine.
The important things are ergonomics, lens choice, size (although that might come under ergonomics), what you actually what to use it for (wildlife, portrait, everyday use etc).
Listen to advise on this forum, it'll in the main be very good.

I agree with Nostromo above, the MP count is about the least important factor when choosing a camera for me. A friend of mine, who was a professional photographer at the time, said "20mp of s*** is still s***" - this was back when 20mp was high, the norm being 10mp. And they were right, ignore all the numbers, especially when it comes to budget compact cameras, they're all much of a muchness. Have you looked into lens selections for your various options? Maybe check some reviews for guidance on youtube, that way you at least get to see someone handle it, get an idea of the size and ergonomics and get to see it in action.

If you're going to be shooting wildlife with a long lens then you should/must buy a camera with an electronic (or optical) viewfinder. Neither of your selections have this so will be very unsteady when used at arms' length with a 300mm+ lens.

Mirrorless is a good choice. I would also recommend Fuji X, based on the lens choices and ergonomics.

As above, an Electronic ViewFinder (EVF) is very useful and is worth th size increase in the camera body.
