help deadline tomoro.. which lens do i choose????

I'm going away to The Gambia and need a lens .. I've read comments on here regarding lenses which has thrown me of track.

I was going to buy the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS as i've heard its an great lens. But was told to get the: Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM as it'll give more scope.
But then I read on here that this lens would only be good for wildlife in the garden and that it would be better to save for a better lens...

So confused.. Will this be a waste of money for capturing any wild life.. ???

Dead line is tomoro eeeekkk...
 
The 75-300 will definitely get you some shots that are worth keeping. They might not be on a par with the pros but you'll kick yourself if you don't take something long-ish because you'll miss once in a lifetime shots.

Yes you may be better off with the 100-400 or a long prime, but if they are out of budget they are out of budget.

Thanks very much.. get so confused on here.. and i'm terrible for making decisions.. but i think thats done it.. i said the 75-300 but i meant the 70-300.. is this worth the extra money??
 
i have the 55-250 which is a great lens when iv been walking and shooting (Trying to) wildlife. i do sometimes feel that a little bit more would be nice. Obviously we would all save for a better lens but if your going on a potentially one off trip then you need a lens. all comes down to what you can afford!

What's your budget - I believe the 75-300 is not that well regarded - the 70-300 IS is - be sure which one you are getting.

Let us know your budget - and I assume this is for wildlife primarily - does that mean big animals or birds, I assume you don't mean bugs etc.....

and also I meant to say don't get obsessed with taking pictures - remember to enjoy the experience! We sometimes get a bit lost with that.....and take some good binoculars!

It will be for wildlife and holiday pics..

Budget it around the £350 mark. Got a quote for the 70-300 for £340. So thinking of going for it..

I have the sigma 18-55mm. And always find myself wanting to get shots further away and not having the scope.
Can the 70-300 be used for any landscape stuff..???

I've not owned the 70-300 but I know it's highly regarded on here for it's excellent optical ability - if you can afford it I'd say go for it! the IS won't hurt either :thumbs:

I've used my 70-200 for landscapes so see no reason you couldn't use yours - it's not typical landscape range (which you have your sigma for). You won't get the traditional wide landscapes in but you can get more 'straight ahead' landscapes if that makes sense.

Hi, i hope you really enjoy your trip.

Just in case you are not aware, i have been making enquiries regarding the 70-300 and i understand there are three versions; a standard entry one, then one with IS and finally one with IS and USM. Not sure which one you have had a quote for £340 for?

its for the CANON EF70-300 F4/5-6 IS USM Does that sound like the right one.. god its confusing..

Hi,

That is the best option of the three so, as long as you think 75-300 is the best option, and it suits your budget, then go for that one! May i ask where you have found it at that price please? Best i had found new was £385 on Amazon.

If it helps at all, i can't offer any kind of technical opinions as i am very new to photography, but my partner was recommended this option by a couple of camera shops when we were in Bath for a few days recently. I have been looking at several here on the forum and e-bay and they regularly make £320 or so second hand so even if you don't like it there is an opportunity to recover most of your investment.

I have a business account with a company so I can get it through them... And the VAT is still frozen which knocks a bit of the price to.. So it all helps..

Hi Tracey, just to make sure you get the correct lens, it's the 70-300 IS not the 75-300.

Buying off here I would personally prefer to ebay if you can, also there is someone on here called kerso that you can PM for a price list that a lot of people use, and he is a fair bit cheaper. You'd need to check re warranties etc with him, as I think they may be US imports. He has a good rep all round though.

Hi Al,

Thanks very much for the advice;it is much appreciated. I quite agree that i would have more confidence in buying from someone on here rather than ebay. It was a typo in my last post; it is the 70-300 i have been researching. Thanks also for the advice regarding Kerso. My understanding from other posts is that lenses actually have worldwide warranty rather than the regional ones that the cameras themselves have.

Just to clarify, as Al spotted, i meant the 70-300 not the 75-300 i typed!

Great deal from your company - i would definitely go for that!

Thanks for the good wishes; all very new to me but i am so pleased i discovered this forum as everyone is so helpful and i have not been made to feel a charlie when i have posted questions.
