hi all,

I know there is plenty of posts on here about this. But there are so many varying opinions.
So what colour is best for walls. I would like to have a dark area for low key shots and another area for some high key ones. Would i be mad to have one white and one black wall?

any help appreciated

Hi there dawn, i did the same as your doing and converted my garage and painted the ceiling white and the walls grey, seems to work very well, ive also got black drapes with eyelets in and hooks in the ceiling so i can hang them down either side of the studio , and this is what i do when shooting low key.

The ceiling needs to be painted matt black, because if it isn't you'll get unwanted light bouncing off it and destroying your lighting control. Black ceilings are a massive help in any studio, but with a very low ceiling, such as in the average garage, there's no real alternative.

Black walls are a very good idea too, for the same reason, but not very practical. A good compromise is to have white walls but with black drapes that can be pulled across when needed.

This kind of decoration will allow you to have high key, low key, white background and black background - 4 totally different arrangements

This may sound like a stupid question but unless you are going for a full on conversion with central heating etc, what do you do to keep the garage warm enough for clients to be comfortable?

Cheers

John
