Beginner Help. Confused over which studio lighting to buy

Hi. I'm planning on buying my partner studio lighting for Xmas. My budget is around £500. I was looking at the elinchrom 400 sd lite kit (£629) or the Lencarta smart flash 2x 400 boxes (£339). I'm confused. Why is there such a variation in price and are boxes the way ahead or one box and one umbrella. He's a keen amateur and I'm sure that's all he'll remain. Thanks in anticipation.

If the specs are very similar go for the Lencarta, lots of happy customers of Lencarta around and I'm sure if Gary Edwards is around you'll get some sound neutral advice although there are many others that will offer just as good advice.
 
Hi, I have the lencarta equipment and it is very good. There has been a number of threads over in the studio lighting section worth reading. One soft box and one umbrella will be more versatile than two softboxes.

I'm sure he will be very pleased with his present.
 
As above, all I'd add is that if he's not got a permanent studio space, upgrade the softbox to the Profold. Speak to Garry on the phone, he'll sort you out.

Well since no one else has, I'll reply. I own Elinchrom and they are great lights. But honestly, the Lencarta will probably do the same job for a lot cheaper. For basic use they will both be up to scratch.

As far as modifiers are concerned everyone is a bit different but I'd go for a brolly and a softbox to start with.

I suspect maybe the reason you haven't had any replies is because you didn't post in the lighting section. If you do you will probably find people will respond faster.

No doubt you will get lots of different views on this as in most things on photography forums, because there is so much personal preference involved but good luck with it :)
 
As Mike said it's an often asked question. There's loads of similar threads in Lighting.

The simple answer is that:
That Elinchrom kit is 2x 400Ws heads and the Lencarta price is for 2x 200Ws heads, Lencarta don't do 400Ws heads, but you can get 2x 300Ws or 2x 600Ws Elite Pro kits for slightly less than the Elinchrom. There isn't a vast difference in either the quality or the price. Personally I'd recommend Lencarta, you'll be dealing direct with the distributor rather than buying through a retail outlet (probably the biggest factor in the price difference)
Yes I'd recommend a softbox and Umbrella kit
