Hi guys and girls,
Ive got a Canon 50D and Ive noticed the last few weeks when using my Canon 17-85mm I keep getting:
50D_err01_A17987_250.jpg

(Not my picture)

It only started doing this if I was doing long exposures of over 15 seconds but its got alot worse and now does it 4 out of 5 times of trying to take any kind of shot at all. Making the lens totally unusable. :'(

The contacts are perfectly clean, And Ive used all my lens's and friends ones on my camera and this is the only one I have problems with (So got to be the lens right? Not the camera)

Has any one had this problem themselves or know of anyone thats had it, and how to get it fixed?
I've got a feeling its going to have to be sent to Canon for repair but thats surely going to cost a fortune.

Has the same problem with my 24-105 on my 1Ds. Turned out to be the ribbon cable within the lens. Canon fixed price repair was about £115. Maybe cheaper to get a new lens

I had an issue with that lens last year, turned out to be a faulty IS motor :( my best advise is to get it off to a canon authorised service centre  they'll find out what the issue is and give you a price, and you can then choose if you want it sorting or if it's time to buy a new lens
