Hi All,

First new post and a cry for help .... !

In a bit of a pickle ....

Just been shooting shots this morning at my cousins pre wedding ceremony on two Canon 40d's. Come back home to back up the photos ready for the evening party. One of the 40d's transferred the pictures across to the PC via a usb cable using the EOS utility with no problem (this had a Sandisk 8GB Extreme 60mbs card in).
The second camera failed to transfer, (2nd had a Sandisk 8GB Extreme III 30mbs card in), the camera top display kept coming up with 'Busy'. So i placed the card in the working camera and the pictures were transferred.

However on return to the 2nd camera, although the camera comes on it fails to take shots, even though shotter and aperture settings chnage on the top lcd display when zooming on the lens. The Menu button doesn't appear to work, infact the back LCD doesn't appear to work as the 'Sensor Cleaning' splash does not appear when switching on ! I have swapped batteries, lens, cards, even left the CR2 battery out to hopefully reset it !

Does anyone know if there's anything I can do to resolve this ... I am thinking I'll have to take it in for a repair !

Should the LCD go, it's only had about 8000 shots taken on it.

Any help much appreciated ....

The only thing I would suggest is to try updating the firmware, maybe the firmware on the camera has become corrupted if you upset it when it was busy...
You will of course have to do this blind, but at least you have another 40D so you know what keys to press.
I never use the PC transfer. Taking the card out and using a high-speed reader is faster.

Thanks for the reply, I will try that tonight.

I have been using the PC transfer for a couple of years now without any issues, appreciated it is slower but allows the file names to be written. I'm sure there's other ways to do this, I'll investigate after the wedding now.

I find that sometimes EOS Utilities doesn't always recognise the camera on the first go. But I would always unplug the USB connection first and let the Busy go off before removing the memory card. If you've removed the card whilst the camera was still USB connected and the Busy light was on.. then the suggestion to reinstall the firmware sounds like the obvious step to me.

if its the LCD and the shutter isnt working id suspect hardware failure. has it been knocked or got wet etc?

huh? copying files with a reader doesnt affect the files at all..

+1..;)

Have you tried reconnecting to the PC and firing up EOS Utility again? It might give the camera a little nudge to stop thinking it is busy. In order to remove the camera the steps I follow are....

1. Close EOS Utility and wait a couple of seconds.
2. Turn off the camera - you should hear the little "ding-dong" as the peripheral disappears from sight.
3. Remove USB cable.

Very rarely (like maybe once or twice) I think I have seen the camera being weird, possibly when I've pulled the plug without disconnecting in the right sequence. The camera still thinks it is connected to the PC in some way and doesn't want to play. However, I would think that removing both batteries should certainly reset the camera, so if that hasn't worked I think you might be looking at a repair. Still, it's got to be worth reconnecting first and disconnecting "properly", just in case.

welcome to the world of film. if you know what you are doing, it wont be a big deal

Yeah, and the film cameras don't get light leaks, faulty, sticky shutters, broken command dials, and all the other nastyness...
