I am just about to get back into photography after a hiatus and want some advice on what to buy. I've always been a nikon guy and want to stay this way. I have around £1000 to spend and was looking at a d90 (body only), Tamron 17-50 and 50mm prime (1.8). I'm most intrested in landscape and portrait photography and thought these two lens would cover everything i need. Is there another camera/lens combination that would make better use of my cash?

The 50mm 1.8 seems a bit pointless if you're going for the 17-50 as well, I bought the same combo (plus the 70-300 VR) when I bought my D80 and found that the 50mm got almost no use.

Perhaps putting the money towards either a Tokina 11-16mm or a flashgun might be a better idea....

I've mentioned the Tokina 11-16 so many times since using the forum again, simply what a lens, for your wide angle landscapes i don't think you can get a better lens for the price.

Id be tempted to get that, and perhaps a prime or cheaper zoom

I was thinking that also about the 50mm prime, that's why i'm asking the advice of the masses!!

50mm 1.8D goes well with a d90,
Nice shallow DOF at 1.8
Sharp
Equivalent to 75mm on the old 35mm film so close to the traditional length for portraiture.
Around £70 second hand and a little over £100 new

If your saying portraits you'll probably want something a bit longer than 50mm and since you have that covered already (focal length wise) seems its perhaps not the best plan. an 85 or 100mm prime? No idea about nikon if they have a good zoom in that range for that sort of price.

Don't forget a spare battery and memory cards!

i moved the exact same thread that was started yesterday out of the forum, can we try not to make a new thread everyday please?
